About The German Motor Company
The German Motor Company (GMC) began trading in November 1984 from Woodlands Way, East Putney, London.
The business was founded by Phil Salvage, Dave Travis and three others who had been apprenticed when aged 16 at Jack Barclays, the main London Rolls Royce/Bentley and VW/Audi dealership.
Phil was a time-served apprentice, then mechanic, on Rolls Royce before moving into management and becoming the Senior Reception Engineer for Rolls/Bentley, whilst Dave was a mechanic on VW/Audi.
Phil and Dave remain with GMC today as Managing Director and Workshop Manager respectively.
Jacquie Coombes joined us around 6 months after we started business coming from Putney Ford and remains as our Reception Manager.
Over the years the business has built up a loyal customer base in South West London. We set out in the Testimonial section of this site extracts from customers' letters going back for 20 years. A file of these of letters is kept in our reception and any customer is welcome to peruse this file - please ask to see it.
After nearly 27 years trading from our Putney site our premises there fell due to be redeveloped into luxury flats and offices.
In January 2011 we opened our new workshop at 62-64 Kimber Road, Wandsworth, London SW18 4PP, being the former garage of Joe Macari, a Ferrari and Maserati dealership, which has moved to premises nearby, with its new showroom directly opposite our premises.
In 2013 we acquired additional space allowing us to expand our workshop and parking areas behind our Kimber Road premises.
By co-incidence in March 2011 Jack Barclays moved into their new Bentley repair shop which is within 300m of our premises, so Kimber Road is now a major centre in South West London for the repair of quality motor cars.
We now employ 13 people in our Kimber Road premises.
It also has 2 new single-man MOT testing ramps for all diesel and petrol cars.
